What you need to know about your Mental Health Insurance Coverage for Counseling.

Before you schedule an appointment with a counselor it is important that you call your insurance provider and check your mental health coverage. Having health insurance does not guarantee you coverage and you may have out of pocket expense you will be required to pay such as deductible, coinsurance, or co-payment. There may also be a limit of sessions per year and sometimes you are required to submit a prior authorization before you start counseling.

In order to check your insurance coverage you will need to call the number listed on the back of your health insurance card. Make sure you call the phone number listed for mental or behavioral health. Sometimes our mental health coverage is not managed by our insurance provider. For example, United Health Care, and Oscar are managed by OPTUM.

The following information is needed to check your insurance benefit. Your name as listed on your insurance card, DOB, member ID, and policy number. Make sure you have a pen and paper handy. You will need to write down the name of the insurance provider representative, their badge number, and confirmation number in case they are unable to provide you an email or fax with an explanation of benefits.

Questions to ask your Insurance Provider about your Mental Health Coverage.

  • Does my insurance plan cover counseling (CPT Code 90791 & 90837, 90834)?

  • Are there any limits to the number of sessions per year If yes, how many?

  • Do I have a deductible that needs to be met, if so how much?

  • Do I have a coinsurance, if so how what is the percentage?

  • Do I have a co-payment, if so how much?

  • Do I have out of network benefits, if yes how much does it cost to utilize these benefits? How do I submit a Superbill?

  • Is (name of therapist you wish to see) or (name of the counseling practice) in network? For example: Is Jennifer L. Hillier in network? or Is Mending Hearts Counseling in network?

  • Can you please email or fax my explanation of benefits (EOB) If they are unable to provide you with an EOB. Make sure you write down the name of the representative their badge number and confirmation number for the call.

We accept Out of Network Benefits from any insurance and will provide you with a superbill.

We are out of network and do not accept the following:

  • Florida Medicaid

  • Medicare

  • TriWest

Our Location

We are conveniently located on the 5th floor of Energy Plaza II in San Antonio. We currently only offer HIPAA-compliant video conferencing teletherapy for virtual counseling. In addition to Austin, Dallas, and Houston, we also accept new clients from rural areas throughout Texas. Additionally, we accept clients from Florida. In the United Kingdom, we can also see clients for virtual appointments.
